Reporting Absences

Calling in your child’s absence is very important. The office phone number is 510-818-3600. The day's absences should be called in no later than 9:45 a.m., but messages can be left day or night.  When doing so, please leave the following information:

  • Please say your child’s name clearly. Spelling the last name is very helpful.
  • Teacher’s name and room number.
  • Reason for the absence, i.e.:  illness, dental or doctor appointment, out of town, etc. If it is a dental or medical appointment, please get a dated note from the doctor to excuse the absence.
  • Please leave a phone number for the office to call you with any questions.

It is a parent’s/guardian's responsibility to do this with each absence. If proper verification is not provided within three (3) school days, the absence will be recorded as unexcused (NUSD AR 5113) with no exceptions.

If your child has a medical appointment we ask that you schedule the appointment after school. If this cannot be avoided, in order to make the tardy an excused tardy, please ask the medical office to provide you with a slip indicating that your child was at a medical appointment. If the student is going to be gone for the day due to medical appointment and coming back during school hours is not going to be possible, a note from the medical office is also needed for the absence to be excused.

Newark Unified Administrative Regulation 5113 states, “When a student has had 10 absences in the school year for illness, any further absences for illness must be verified by a physician.” If a doctor’s note is not provided following the 10th illness, the absences will be recorded as unexcused.
